Meaning and source
This retelling follows Liu Xiang’s Shuoyuan, volume 9, Zhengjian: a young attendant uses a garden scene to dissuade the king of Wu from attacking Chu. A related earlier passage in Zhuangzi, Shanmu, has Zhuangzi and a different bird; the two frames should not be merged. 螳螂捕蝉,黄雀在后 (táng láng bǔ chán, huáng què zài hòu) warns that pursuing an immediate gain can blind someone to a danger behind it. In this version the animals are threatened, not described as actually killed.
