Wu Gang and the tree on the moon
The Tianzhi section of Duan Chengshi’s Youyang Zazu records Wu Gang learning to become an immortal, committing an unspecified offense, and being condemned to cut a gui tree on the moon whose wounds heal. This retelling preserves that brief account without inventing his offense. 桂树 (guìshù) is the mythical moon tree, often translated as an osmanthus or cassia tree; this legend is distinct from the stories of Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit.
