What is counted

Characters and words
are not the same thing.

A Chinese character is one Hanzi symbol, such as 山 or 海. A Chinese word may contain one character or several characters, such as 故事, 红灯笼, or 井底之蛙.

This counter reports both. Word totals use the browser’s Chinese word segmentation, while Hanzi totals count only characters from the Han script. Punctuation, Latin letters, numbers, and spaces remain visible in the overall character count but do not inflate the Hanzi count.

Hanzi count

All Chinese characters plus the number of unique characters used.

Word estimate

Chinese word-like segments, useful for lessons and graded reading passages.

Reading estimate

A gentle learner pace of about 120 Chinese characters per minute.

Chinese counter questions

Are punctuation and spaces counted?

They appear in the total character count. The dedicated Chinese-character count includes Hanzi only, so you can compare the two totals clearly.

Why is the word count an estimate?

Written Chinese has no spaces between words. Segmentation depends on context, and different dictionaries may divide a phrase in slightly different ways.

Does Shanhai Story store my text?

No. Counting happens locally in your browser and updates as you type.
