Chinese HSK
Level Checker

Find out how difficult a Chinese passage may feel before you start reading it.

How it works

A reading estimate,
not an exam score.

The checker segments your Chinese text into words and compares them with the nine-level framework in the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (GF0025-2021).

Its suggested level is the lowest vocabulary band that covers at least 90% of recognised word occurrences. The official vocabulary list groups advanced words as HSK 7–9 rather than assigning each word separately to 7, 8, or 9. Names, new expressions, and specialised vocabulary may still appear as “Not listed.”

HSK level checker questions

Does this check grammar difficulty?

Not yet. The current estimate focuses on vocabulary and word coverage. Sentence length, grammar, cultural terms, and context can make a passage feel easier or harder.

Which HSK standard does it use?

It uses the three-stage, nine-level GF0025-2021 framework. Levels 1–6 have separate vocabulary lists; advanced vocabulary is officially grouped as HSK 7–9.

Is my pasted text uploaded?

No. The analysis runs inside your browser. The text is not sent to Shanhai Story or saved to an account.
